Small brown birds are the hardest group for beginners. Many are streaky, many are the same size, and many hop through the same shrubs. The good news is that a handful of species make up most of what you will see in a Georgia yard, and a few simple questions narrow things down quickly.
Which birds are present depends on the season and on where you are in the state, so the lists below include notes on when each is typically around.
Questions to Ask First
- Is the chest streaked, spotted or plain? Streaks suggest a song sparrow or a thrasher. Plain suggests a chipping sparrow, a wren or a female finch.
- Is there a cap or eyebrow? A rusty cap, a white eyebrow, or a striped crown is a good clue.
- How long is the tail? A long tail points to a thrasher, while a short, cocked tail suggests a wren.
- What is the bill like? A thin bill suggests an insect eater, while a short, thick, cone-shaped bill suggests a seed eater.
- Season: Some birds, like the white-throated sparrow, are mostly winter visitors.
Common Small Brown Birds in Georgia
Carolina Wren
A small, round, rich reddish-brown bird with a long white eyebrow and a pale buff belly. It often holds its tail cocked upright. It is loud for its size, with a repeated “tea-kettle” type song. Carolina wrens are year-round residents and often nest in odd spots such as flowerpots and porches.
House Wren
Smaller and plainer than a Carolina wren, with no strong eyebrow and a more uniform gray-brown color. It is mostly a migrant or winter bird in Georgia.
Song Sparrow
A streaky brown sparrow with a dark central spot in the breast streaks and a rounded, rather long tail that it pumps in flight. Often found in brushy areas and edges.
Chipping Sparrow
In breeding season, it has a bright rusty cap, a clean white eyebrow and a black line through the eye, with a plain gray chest. In winter, the cap is duller. It is a common yard and feeder bird.
Field Sparrow
A small sparrow with a pink bill, a plain face with a white eye ring, and a rusty cap. Found in brushy fields.
White-throated Sparrow
Mostly a winter visitor to Georgia. It has a bright white throat patch and a striped head, usually with a yellow spot between the eye and bill. It scratches in leaf litter below feeders.
House Sparrow
A common, introduced bird around buildings. Males have a gray crown, black bib and chestnut nape. Females are plain buff-brown with a pale eyebrow stripe.
Brown Thrasher
Georgia’s state bird. It is larger than a sparrow, with a long, rufous-brown tail, heavy dark streaks on a pale chest, a curved bill and a yellow eye. It thrashes through leaf litter looking for insects. Thrashers are known for a long, varied song in which phrases are often repeated twice.
Brown-headed Nuthatch
A tiny, short-tailed bird of southern pine forests, with a brown cap and a pale spot on the back of the neck. It climbs trunks and branches, sometimes head-first. See our guide to types of nuthatches.
Brown Creeper
A well-camouflaged bird with a streaky brown back and white underparts. It spirals up tree trunks, using its stiff tail as a prop, and is mostly seen in fall and winter.
Female and Young House Finches
Females lack red and are streaky brown all over with a short, thick bill. They are often found with the red males.
Hermit Thrush and Wood Thrush
Thrushes are larger than sparrows. The hermit thrush is a winter visitor with a reddish tail and spotted breast, and the wood thrush is a summer breeder with a rusty head and bold round spots.
Brown-headed Cowbirds
How can you tell the difference between a male and female brown-headed cowbird?
Males are glossy black with a warm brown head. Females are plain gray-brown and lightly streaked, with a short, thick bill, and they are easy to mistake for a sparrow or a female finch. Both sexes have a short, conical bill. Cowbirds lay their eggs in other birds’ nests. For other black birds you might confuse them with, see our guide to the black birds of North Carolina.
Answers to Common Questions
What is a small brown and white bird?
Several are brown above and whitish below, including the chipping sparrow, the brown creeper (streaked back, white belly), the female house sparrow and many sparrows seen in winter. Look at the face pattern and the chest to separate them.
What kind of bird is brown with a long tail?
In Georgia, the brown thrasher and the Carolina wren (which has a shorter tail it often cocks up) are the two most common answers. The thrasher is larger, with a streaked chest and a yellow eye.
What type of bird is a thrasher?
Thrashers are members of the mimid family, which also includes mockingbirds and catbirds. They have long tails and curved bills and are known for a varied song.
Attracting Small Brown Birds
Many of these birds come to feeders, and our guide to backyard birds in Georgia covers other visitors to welcome. Sparrows and towhees forage on the ground, so scatter millet or sunflower chips under a feeder or on a platform. Wrens eat insects, and suet can help. A brush pile or dense native shrubs give cover that ground-feeding birds appreciate. If you live farther north, our guide to common brown birds in Virginia covers many of the same species.
